Shut off the TV?? Are you NUTS???!!

Posted by: nickitompkins on: January 27, 2009

The first time I heard my mentor, Michael Dlouhy, tell me to shut the TV off for 30 days, I really thought he was nuts. I was trying to remember when, if ever, I had ever gone more than a few hours, besides when I was working, that the TV wasn’t on. Not only did he advocate no TV, he added the radio, magazines and newspapers.

So, I have to give up TV and magazines??? Those were the worst. I could easily forego the Sunday newspaper and I rarely listened to the radio, but TV and my PEOPLE magazine—now you see my challenge.

Why was this so important, I wondered??? Michael told me, especially for  me being a “blue” personality (I’ll tell you about that in another post), that I have so much chatter going on in my mind that in order to find out what I’m telling myself, I have to stop all the other chatter. In other words, I found out that I had some not-too pretty chatter going on in my head, not to mention what I was allowing from all the other venues.

I remember many instances, but even the first day, I was washing dishes and cleaning up the counters when this thought hit me, “my husband never cleans the kitchen up after himself”. Well, that wasn’t true! Where did that come from??? Why did I think that thought at all? I was doing something that needed to be done. And believe me, that wasn’t the first or the last time negative thoughts tried to visit. No, they still try to get me but I’ve learned to change those thoughts for good ones.

The first few days without the TV seemed like the first time I fasted. It was quiet and I wanted food. The longer I went without the TV and magazines, the easier it got and I really started to learn some things about myself that the chatter kept me too busy from learning; who I am and what I want out of life.

This is an ongoing process but it has gotten easier. The TV is rarely on when I’m home and I’ve only bought 3 PEOPLE magazines in over a year and a half. I really recommend this cleansing if you’re serious about where you’re going in life. You can join a bunch of us that gather weekly on the phone. To find out more, just visit www.30daycleanse.com. It’s totally free to join us and I welcome you to become a better you. I know I have benefitted from this mental cleanse.
